The Corbomite Maneuver OP Event Preview

This August, WizKids/NECA will launch a brand new organized play event based on the Star Trek Original Series Episode, The Corbomite Maneuver.

While mapping an unexplored region of space, an unidentified object approaches your fleet at light speed, but it slows down as it nears your ships. As you attempt to move away from it, it follows your every move and won’t let you escape. You determine that it is a space buoy and quickly learn that it is emitting a radiation that is harmful to your ships. You must find a way to escape it or destroy it.

Suddenly, you are set upon by an enemy fleet. The enemy ships seem to have the same problems with the buoy. Will your fleet survive the deadly radiation as well as the attacks from the enemy fleet?

The Star Trek: Attack Wing – Corbomite Maneuver OP event is simple. Place the Objective Token directly in the center of the play area that represents the Space Buoy. Treat the Space Buoy as an Obstacle with the following exception: instead of rolling for damage, any ship that overlaps or is overlapped by the buoy automatically suffers 1 critical damage and places an Auxiliary Power Token beside it.

In addition, at the end of each End Phase per round, the buoy will move toward the nearest ship from either fleet. Using a 2

[straight] Maneuver Template, move the buoy towards the closest point of the nearest ship’s base. This may be a different ship every round. If the buoy overlaps the ship’s base, move it backward along its Maneuver Template until it no longer overlaps the ship’s base.

After the buoy moves, place an Auxiliary Power Token beside every ship that is within Range 1 of the Buoy. The ship that is nearest to the buoy must disable 1 Active Shield Token as well, if possible. If that ship is Cloaked, it must flip its [Cloak] Token over to its red side.

The Space Buoy can be attacked and destroyed. Any round in which the buoy receives 6 or more damage from one or more attacks, it is destroyed. If this happens, the nearest ship within Range 1 of the buoy suffers 3 damage and all other ships within Range 1 of the buoy suffer 2 damage. Once the damage is inflicted, remove the Objective Token from the play area. If the Buoy receives less than 6 damage in a round, it is completely repaired and the damage cards are removed during the End Phase.

The game ends when one player is eliminated or time is called.

Every player who shows up and plays in this event at their friendly local game store gets a resource as a participation prize. The resource for this event is Condition Alert. At the start of the game place 6 Mission Tokens on this card. During the End Phase, if a ship in your fleet has exactly 1 unused Token beside it (Evade or Battle Stations), you may remove 1 Mission Token from this card to leave that Token beside the ship instead of removing it. How frustrating is it to have to clear an unused token during the End Phase? Now with Condition Alert you can save those unused Evade or Battle Stations Tokens for the next round. For only 5SP Condition Alert seems like a sound tactical decision.

If you win The Corbomite Maneuver event, or you get the fellowship award, you will go home with the I.R.W. Rateg Card Prize Pack. The I.R.W. Rateg is a Romulan Bird of Prey and gains one shield slot, but trades one crew slot for one extra weapon upgrade slot and a tech upgrade slot, compared to generic version of the ship. The special ability for the I.R.W. Rateg allows you to re-roll up to 2 of your defense dice while defending when cloaked. Cloaking ships depend heavily on rolling defense dice and getting enough evade results to make it to another round of play. This special ability will make it much more likely that you can roll those valuable evade results when needed.

The Captain in the I.R.W. Rateg Prize Pack is Tal. If his card is assigned to a Romulan Ship, when attacking at Range 1 with your primary weapon, during the Roll Attack Dice step, gain +1 attack die. Romulans rejoice, Tal will insure that any Romulan ship he commands will attack with some extra firepower.

Military Secrets is an Elite Talent that allows you to force a defending ship to roll 1 less defense die (-2 defense dice if that ship is cloaked) when you attack. As much as cloaking ships depend on defense dice to survive, this elite talent can help remove some of that advantage for one attack.

Nanclus is the Crew Upgrade in the I.R.W. Rateg Prize Pack. As an action you may discard this card to target an opposing ship at Range 1-3. The target ship gains +1 attack die this round, but cannot roll defense dice this round. If you like Military Secrets, then Nanclus is even better at preventing an opposing ship from rolling any defense dice that round. This card is best used against a ship with a low captain skill, blow them out of the sky before they even get a chance to shoot back!

Control Central is the Tech Upgrade for this Prize Pack. You may disable this card to perform one of the Actions on your Action Bar as a free Action. Action economy is a major theme amongst top tier players. Being able to perform another action from your action bar as a free action is well worth the cost of this upgrade.

Main Batteries is the final upgrade and is a Weapon Upgrade that adds one additional Weapon Upgrade icon to your Upgrade bar. Otherwise, this is a secondary weapon that can fire 3 attack dice at range 1-3. This attack places two time tokens on this card.
