{"id":7062,"date":"2017-03-01T16:47:09","date_gmt":"2017-03-01T16:47:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/67272bb316.nxcli.io\/heroclix\/?p=7062"},"modified":"2017-03-01T21:53:18","modified_gmt":"2017-03-01T21:53:18","slug":"introduction-and-goals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wizkids.com\/heroclix\/2017\/03\/01\/introduction-and-goals\/","title":{"rendered":"HeroClix 2017 Rules 0: Introduction and Goals"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-1 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" style=\"--awb-border-radius-top-left:0px;--awb-border-radius-top-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-right:0px;--awb-border-radius-bottom-left:0px;--awb-padding-top:20px;--awb-padding-bottom:20px;--awb-flex-wrap:wrap;\" ><div class=\"fusion-builder-row fusion-row\"><div class=\"fusion-layout-column fusion_builder_column fusion-builder-column-0 fusion_builder_column_1_1 1_1 fusion-one-full fusion-column-first fusion-column-last\" style=\"--awb-bg-size:cover;\"><div class=\"fusion-column-wrapper fusion-flex-column-wrapper-legacy\"><div class=\"fusion-text fusion-text-1\"><p>Greetings HeroClix fans!<\/p>\n<p>After extensive behind-the-scenes work, it\u2019s finally time to start showing everyone what we\u2019ve been working on in terms of updating the HeroClix rules.\u00a0 What we are sharing is still going through final playtesting so while nearing completion there may still be some tweaks that occur before being finalized.\u00a0 We do not have an official date for when these rules will be locked down, but until that date is determined the current rules stand and all rules we talk about in these articles are <strong><u>not official.<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 We do know that any official rollout will be after the <a href=\"http:\/\/win.wizkids.com\/wp\/2017-wizkids-world-championships\/?mc_cid=7390363407&amp;mc_eid=%5bUNIQID%5d\">2017 HeroClix World Championships<\/a> at Origins Game Fair. We\u2019ll be sharing many articles (with no set schedule or quantity) talking about where we are and where we\u2019re going, but with this first article we wanted to discuss the process of making the rules better.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve been spending a lot of time talking to retailers, players, and judges on how to approach this undertaking.\u00a0 We learned that most shared the same common goals and these became our goals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Make it easier for new and existing players to understand what is intended by rules language and how rules interact.<\/li>\n<li>Keep the depth of strategic complexity the same.<\/li>\n<li>Remove corner cases that added very little to the game but caused confusion, irritation, and unintended effects.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t make unnecessary fundamental changes or so many tweaks that it feels like a new game.<\/li>\n<li>Keep the gameplay firmly focused on fun heroic combat and less focused on finding rules \u201cloopholes\u201d to exploit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some results of the goals above will include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Creating new language for HeroClix that is succinct and reusable. If it reads the same way, it will play the same way.<\/li>\n<li>Clarifying timing so it\u2019s obvious when you can and when you can\u2019t activate effects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When you first see what we are working on, you may be worried about new formatting and language.\u00a0 At first it will appear that more has changed than actually has.\u00a0 Most effects are identical to what they were before this initiative but have a new format to help communicate exactly how and when they can be used.<\/p>\n<p>Some specific interactions and corner cases are different and a few power level changes will be implemented as part of normal rule revisions. We want to stress that our changes will be careful and deliberate, and the first few articles may elicit concern that it\u2019s just the \u201ctip of the iceberg,\u201d when instead you should know that we are planning on sharing most of the big changes early on in this process.<\/p>\n<p>HeroClix can be difficult to teach to new players, and though our community is very strong right now, we need to continue to grow it for the future so that HeroClix can be around forever and fulfill its rightful place as one of the all-time \u201cclassic\u201d games. Cleaning up the rules is a first step on the path of making HeroClix easier to teach and more engaging to play right from the start.<\/p>\n<p>The 2017 rules will not be the \u201cfinal\u201d HeroClix rules. We\u2019ll continue to evolve them in a way that serves the game and its players best. For those who will think we didn\u2019t go far enough, for this iteration we focused on the goals above, and not:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rebalancing all standard powers.<\/li>\n<li>Nerfing existing powerful builds or characters.<\/li>\n<li>Restoring characters, teams, or play styles to previous power levels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When looking at a large and passionate player base like we have, there will be players wanting no changes and those wanting major changes and everything in-between. Throughout all of this, we kept in mind that we want everyone to realize that this is the same game they have grown to love. The new formatting and language, though clearer in many ways, may be tough for some players and we don\u2019t want to lose any, and this is where you come in.<\/p>\n<p>We want to hear your feedback!
